Reflections
Favorite of the year:
At the moment, Other Work for Us to Do. I didn't expect it to connect so strongly with anyone besides its recipient (and I wasn't sure if it would manage that even for her, although I was definitely trying to write to her prompt and preferences), and it's deeply satisfying to know that others have found it compelling enough to reread.
Best of the year:
Witches Can Be Right, Giants Can Be Good received the most comments and recs by far, but that partly had to do with the collision of fandoms, timing, fest culture/traditions, and sheer happy happenstance. But I was still tickled pink by all the laughing and flailing, and it's cool that someone thinks my description of fic!Rahm belongs on a t-shirt. *grin*
Most underappreciated:
*shrug* The manga fandoms are tiny and fragmented, and the feedback historically discouragingly scant, even for lemony pieces. Not As Dumb will likely net depressingly few comments in proportion to the pains I've taken with it, but (as with pretty much every other fic on the list), it didn't exactly give me a choice about not writing it, so yeah, still working on it.
...Plus, many FAKE fans aren't even aware of the extras and sequels that have been published (in Japan only, argh) since Book 7 (I know of at least two people learning about 'em through me), and many of those who are either haven't gotten to 'em or aren't crazy about 'em, so slashing a character that doesn't appear until that season (and only in a few chapters within it) with Severus Snape is totally not the way to go about climbing the fandom popularity trellis ...but if that had been my heart's desire, my heart would have been shredded up and scattered to the winds long ago. So, onwards!
Most fun to write:
I admit I was smirking when I wrote A Queer Eyeful, and I do want to write more Iwaki-Katou-Yoshizumi, because they are each so darn cute, and with a combination of dorkiness and both sexual and artistic intensity that's just irresistible to play with. Part of the fun I'm having with FAKE is writing dialogue for characters who aren't reticent or reserved, and "Witches Can Be Right" likewise let me let loose with language that ought to come with its own jumbo bar of soap.
"Holy crap, that's wrong even for you":
No one actually used this phrase with me (I suspect my years of fervently shipping Whomping Willow/Giant Squid/anyone-in-the-neighborhood might have something to do with that), but I was even more horrified with my brain for Harried than the Rahm/HP collision.
Sexiest Story:
Because I Love You More Than I Can Say.
...Although the reaction to Other Work for Us to Do surprised me (in a very happy way), so what do I know? If nothing else, it suggests that when I lock onto what the characters truly want (as opposed to what I start out thinking they're after, or having to comply with a specific smut requirement), the results may really click with readers in ways I didn't anticipate. Which has happened before, so that's something I need to remember when I'm feeling limp from bunny-battling (as well as staying clear of fests with a R-minimum mandate; nothing wrong with them or their organizers, but they're just not a good fit for me).
Story that shifted my own preconceptions of the characters:
Forward. Not really a shift, though (I hadn't been in the fandom long enough to have concrete preconceptions) -- the story was more my working out my personal fanon for the character in question.
Hardest to write:
Not As Dumb - it's both logistically and emotionally complex, and I'm still sorting through what actually belongs in the story. Moreover, whenever I sit down to the actual writing, characters keep showing up and not shutting up and I then have to re-assess what-all they each (don't) have up their collective sleeves. (I suspect it's going to take more than the four parts I originally envisioned to shake it all out. *clutches head*)
Biggest disappointment:
A larger turnout for my reading of D'accord, d'accord at Terminus would've been nice - like many performers, I like the energy of a full room. (That said, the folks who did show up were awesome, and I still plan to record the fic, so it's not like the prep was wasted.)
I also have three sets of unfinished business from 2007 (a drawing, a fic, and a response-to-translator) that I still need to tackle. If only coffee could make me smarter and more coordinated... *rolls eyes at self*
Biggest surprise:
I'm still kind of flustered at how hard and how quickly I fell for Haru and then FAKE. Never mind the barrage of bunnies...
Most telling:
The drabbles near the end of last winter. And I am still comforted whenever I revisit Karasu's illustration-response to "Twenty-five Years Later."
Plans:
The stuff from 2007. Finishing "Not As Dumb." Mochimune/Miyasaka monster-fic (an expansion of "Encore" and Hazard Cast). Yoshizumi NYR fic. Encouraging you lot and plaguing you with demented plotzillas. *cheerfully waves carrots and blows kisses at all y'all*

I see I might need to feel guilty of luring you away from HP and into the murky waters of yaoi goodness... only I won't. I am so looking forward to that Mochi-fic. There needs to be more Mochi. Soon!
I wish! I'm thinking of giving the sludge in my lungs a name, given its continued semi-perma-residence. But this week has been better than the last so far, and I was feeling down yesterday, so it seemed like a good time to look at what I did get done last year.
There needs to be more Mochi. Soon!
Soon, no. But eventually, yes. :-)
And yes, I do totally blame you for luring me into the Y-N bunny-warren, and dousing me with carrot-juice, and.... (I blame FAKE on Lore. You two are both incorrigible instigatorrificators. ;-) *swears, snugs, and hugs*)
b) I so wish I could get into anime/manga so as to appreciate your new fandom! Tragically, my brain is not set up for it. I can't do graphic novels, either. :(
b) 'sokay. I still have yet to catch Who/Torchwood, after all, not to mention the tantalizingly adorable-sounding fandoms you listed in your Yuletide signup. :-/
I want to see the Mochimune/Miyasaka monster-fic!
And curse you, you infected me with that Haru-does-Hamlet plot bunny, so I took your carrots and should be posting it soon! ~_^
