whimsies of Sumatra and other notes

[info]hp_halloween double-drabbles have been posted! I wrote about Hermione's mad jack-o-lantern skillz for [info]scatteredlogic, and [info]theladyfeylene wrote Even Ministers of Magic Need Some Fun for me.

The BYM is away, and I'm not singing tonight, so I'm wearing All Saints.

Added 685 words to my Snupin Santa fic this morning. 670 of which were a surprise to me. This is what I get for doing more research before bedtime, even though most of it's not even ending up in the story.

Nineveh-uk posted a new Bunter ficlet yesterday.

In a letter to Victor Gollancz on 30 January 1928, Dorothy L. Sayers listed the titles of two Lord Peter short stories she did not complete:

The Tragical Comedy of the Automatic Call-Box (unfinished ms archived at the Wade Center)

The Bathetic (?) Tragedy of the Scandalous Changeling (a footnote observes that, the handwriting being poor, "Bathetic" may have been "Pathetic")

Does this not beg for crossover mayhem? *resolutely nails board across that warren and turns back to the SnuSa beast*

Oh, one more DLS quote - this time to Ivy Shrimpton, 4 March 1927:

I am charmed to hear that John Anthony [her son, whom Shrimpton was foster-mothering] has developed a liking for priests -- I couldn't have stood it if it had been an evangelical minister. However, if he shows any signs of being religious, I wash my hands of him. You may remember that I've got a friend who wants to adopt him if he turns out a crook or a burglar, and I don't want to spoil his chances...

RECS (an Original Character edition)

I was plagued by nightmares last night (high school, you were twenty years ago and I want to be done with you, dammit!) so I indulged in the comfort of fic this morning in between other things. The fics listed in this post all include supporting OCs that I enjoyed meeting -- I'll theorize some other time about what delights me about OCs, but in brief, I like how they often bring out facets of the starring characters' personalities or histories (particularly when they do so with humor or sympathy) that they're unlikely to share with other canonical characters.

DH spoilers under the cut; recs range from PG to NC-17 )

[As I noted in my Snupin Santa sign-up, I am actually generally leery of fics featuring preg (m or f), young kids, or parenting as major themes. In the hands of the right authors, though... *commends the above to you*]

[And, speaking of Snupin Santa -- so many new participants! So many returning! Our ship, it sails strong! *cheers*]

"Placet" - archive/comm update

I'm very fond of my ThinkPad, but its O/S doesn't tend to handle installations well, and when I tried to load Python earlier tonight (in order to take advantage of a LJ community migration tool), it basically choked. I'm not sure I would have been technically adept enough to see the process through, so it's probably just as well.

At any rate, via old-fashioned copy-and-paste, all my [info]placet drabbles and ficlets are now archived on IJ as well as LJ, and the links on the the master timeline will remain connected to Cat's posts to the LJ comm unless/until she reposts them to IJ. The most recent story is Response and Responsibility (originally posted 27 July).
